Shapes of Water

Information

Water is capable of so many transformations; it surrounds us constantly—whether as steam, mist, rain, snow, or ice. Without water, we would not exist. We are made up largely of it. Water affects us all. We come from water and consist almost entirely of water. Water can be a source of pure joy—sailing, swimming in the sea, fountains and waterfalls, diving, gazing at the water, building snowmen; humans are always drawn to water. Where there is water, there is life.

My great musical love, Claude Debussy, drew inspiration from water for so many of his compositions! From gardens in the rain, reflections in the water, footprints in the snow, and mist… Debussy himself renewed and transformed music, disregarded rules, drew inspiration from nature, and created sounds the likes of which had never existed before. In doing so, he inspired many composers who followed him and paved the way for new music.
